The Mario Negri Institute, Milan, concluded from its study that PVC is an important weapon in the complex arsenal medicine has at its disposal to care for patients and to cure diseases. PVC has among definite benefits, says the report, the lack of PVC-related side effects reported over a span of several decades. Though its use is extremely safe,
studies are in progress to eliminate even the theoretical possibility of risks revealed by recent surveys and associated with DEHP, one of the main plasticizers used. The authors also underline that the impression given was that the request to abolish PVC out of hand is a battle of “principle” initiated without having considered the available data or the possible disadvantages this might cause to patients and healthcare personnel and conducted without considering the opinion of experts in this regard. PVC can still be improved, however, conclude the authors.
