In March, the EU Commission extended for three months the decision concerning measures to prohibit the placing on the market of toys and childcare articles made of soft PVC containing certain phthalates intended to be placed in the mouth by children under three years of age . The original motivations that led to the first decision are still valid for the Commission. The motivation behind the delay is essentially the lack of availability of a validated analytical method to control that toys put on the market comply with the exposure limits to plasticisers set by the Committee of Experts of the European Commission (CSTEE) to protect children’s health. The Commission reiterated on this occasion that efforts to provide such validated methodology should be continued.
