An official question was raised by the Catalan Group of the Spanish Senate about the domestic uses of PVC (including food packaging). In its written response, the Spanish Government, via its Ministry of Health and the Consumer answered that it supported the conclusions and recommendations of a study performed by an Expert Committee co-ordinated by the Ministry of Environment. This committee, which integrated various stakeholders, involved producers, users responsible for waste elimination, academics and economical or social sectors. According to the response of the Ministry, the conclusion of the report is that “ there exist no drawback to the use of PVC as packaging material for food applications when the present legislation is respected“. Besides, the general common recommendations about the correct use of PVC packaging are made (temperature of use, contact with fat, use in microwave oven and protection from light of oil packaged in PVC ), and a further evaluation of migration of some additives to fatty food is programmed in 1999.
